Artist’s statement

In a Radio 4 programme about Deepdale Exhibitions in Norfolk, the gallery director I M Birtwistle described my work “exquisite paintings, layered, allied to the work of Schubert”.

My pieces are a response to the land and environment around me, in parts referential, in parts symbolic and allegorical. Each piece is developed using paint, photography, found objects and drawings; this information is then amalgamated into the final piece. These are built up using layers of materials, like the land itself, each layer with its own essence and story – the final result is a harmony.

I have a studio in Hampshire, as well as frequently working in Devon.
